Jurgen Scheuring is the designer for Ascendo.
He stands beside two products. On the left is the Ascendo DASK room-correction device,
which compensates for listening-room anomalies. It retails for 8000 DM. Running on the
Windows-based laptop is the Room-Tools 1.0 software, which produces many measurements,
such as frequency response, impulse response, and waterfall plots. The price for the
software is 8000 DM. Room-Tools can be used on its own without the DASK -- it only
requires that the computer have a sound card and microphone. If you do have the DASK,
though, it and software will work together, the company says, to effectively optimize a
room below 500Hz. Scheuring gave us an interesting demonstration of the duo's ability to
improve bass performance greatly.

Gerhard Brandl stands beside his
top-of-the-line Copulare Grand Porto isolation platform, which is priced at 25,000 DM.
Copulare has other isolation platforms that start at 2300.

SoundStage! European correspondent
Robert Jørgensen (left) holds the D/A portion of 47 Laboratory's newest and most
cost-effective D/A converter, while Jeff Fritz holds the power supply. The tiny 4715
Shigara Ki DAC features an all-ceramic chassis and is priced at $1250 USD.

Where do all those nifty-looking 47 Laboratory
products come from? Junji Kimura is the mind behind (and president of) 47 Laboratory.

The things audiophiles do to kill time at an
audio show. Joe Reynolds of Nordost (left) wondered aloud just how long the spool of wire
he brought for demonstration was. Jeff Fritz promptly responded with, "Let's
see." So Jeff's wife Andrea grabbed one end (she's far down the hall and
hidden behind people), and we determined that the spool was one hallway plus three exhibit
rooms long.
