"Two plus two plus two equals a whole lot
of music!" declares Jeff Fritz. Germany's MDG displayed their twist on surround-sound
playback by using DVD-Audio's center and subwoofer channels as "above left" and
"above right" channels instead. MDG's Werner Dabringhaus played the system in
stereo, four-channel surround, and then his company's "2+2+2" surround mode,
which uses a proprietary recording technique along with corresponding system setup. The
stereo presentation stayed only to the front with limited depth, but dimensionality was
noticeably absent. The four-channel mode quite literally "surrounded" the room
in music, but when compared with the "2+2+2" method, it was noticeably deficient
in spaciousness and dimensionality. Will consumers opt for this type of system? It's hard
to say, but it's not difficult to implement "2+2+2" alongside a regular surround
system with the addition of a couple of front speakers in the "above" positions
(with appropriate cabling and amplification, of course). Speakers used in the demo were by
Acapella and electronics were by Denon and Symphonic Line.
