Ice Cube's Are We There Yet? may be an awful movie, but it sure looked spectacular when displayed with Sony's Qualia 004 projector. In fact, outside of a superbly equipped movie theater, we haven't seen anything that looks better. Based on the demonstration in Munich, which saw the 004 used with a Sony BDZ-S77 Blu-ray Disc player and projected onto a Stewart screen, the Qualia 004's video image is...

...flawless and amazingly detailed. In fact, when Doug Schneider spotted some distortion, he figured it was just one of the usual problems normally associated with digital video images, almost dismissing the 004 as just another good but not necessarily great projector. Closer inspection revealed, though, that it wasn't distortion or any problem with the 004 whatsoever. What was showing up was film grain and flaws in the original footage. The 004 looks so good that Sony might have to start putting warnings on video-disc packaging regarding the limitations of the original source material.

Sony's Qualia 004 is scheduled to be released in Europe in June of this year (it's available in the US now). If we each had 30.000 €, which is the estimated price, to drop on a projector, we'd both own a Qualia 004 in a heartbeat.
