"Wow" was our immediate and
persistent reaction to the system the US distributor of Behold electronics assembled, even
with speakers we've heard many times. Behold products combine advanced audio circuits with
computer technology to create one of the most ergonomic and sonically satisfying demo
systems we've ever heard.
Two Behold BPA768 amps ($38,000 each) drove a
pair of Ascendo System M speakers ($45,000). Behold's CD-Player ($10,000) or the Nova Physics Memory Player was the source. The heart
of the system was Behold's APU768, which performs the preamp functions but is more of a
control center, taking the digital bits from the CD-Player, performing room correction and
crossover adjustments input from a laptop, then
sending the data to the amps where they are converted to analog for the speakers. The
sound was powerful and natural -- authoritative and edgeless -- even at very high volumes.
We are only scratching the surface of this
impressive system of products. Any audio writer who takes on the assignment of writing
about Behold equipment had better be well versed in computer technology.
"Wow."
