LIVE Press Event - Sony |
Titled "Creating New
Digital Lifestyles," Sony's acronym-laden press conference held at the Las Vegas
Convention Center on January 5 spotlighted the company's launch of new products in a
number of categories -- DVD players, Digital 8 camcorders, SACD players, MiniDisc, and the
Memory Stick.
Sony introduced two new portable DVD players, including the $1500 DVP-FX1,
the company's first portable player. It has a 7" LCD TFT 16:9 display and allows
widescreen DVD movies to be viewed in their correct aspect ratio, whether at home or on
the road. The new portable also features a magnesium-alloy casing and a Lithium-Ion
battery that allows up to four hours of playback. The DVP-FX1 will be available in May.
Also introduced at the press conference was
Sony's new digital network-broadcast recorder, the SVR-2000, which uses TiVo technology to
allow consumers to record up to 30 hours of television programming (nine hours of
maximum-quality recording) on its onboard 30GB hard disk. As with all other TiVo
recorders, the SVR-2000 allows viewers to pause or rewind broadcasts as they're being
watched, or even skip commercials. TiVo network service also allows users to record
programming while other pre-recorded shows are being watched and can even suggest programs
to record based on user preferences. The SVR-2000 includes other unique features,
including the ability to transfer recordings via one-touch dubbing to Sony VCRs, and an
onboard MPEG-2 recorder. The SVR-2000 will be available in April, with the surprisingly
low estimated price of $399.
As reported earlier on AudioVideoNews, Sony's new Memory Stick technology
is being rapidly embraced throughout the company's electronics lineup as well as by other
manufacturers. Memory Sticks are now available in 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, and 64MB sizes,
with 128MB and even 1GB Memory Sticks to be available in the future. Sony also announced a
new co-promotion agreement with Circuit City to insert interactive in-store Memory Stick
displays in over 600 Circuit City stores.
