January 6, 2005 - Part 2

Sherwood introduced its first universal A/V players. On top
is the SD-860, priced at $449, and below, seen only by the back panel, is the SD-871,
priced at $799. The higher-end SD-871 features Faroudja DCDi video processing, as well as
video scaling up to 720p and 1080i via the HDMI output.

Two more Sherwood products. The TL-1705W LCD video screen
is HDTV compatible and is priced at $999. In front and to the sides is the DR-670 2.1
virtual-sound DVD system (subwoofer not shown), priced at $399. Both products are meant to
provide a surround-sound experience in a small space with just two speakers.

A number of companies showed retro-looking products
featuring a mix of old and new technologies. TEAC showed three all-in-one console units
with turntables, AM/FM tuners, and CD or cassette players depending on the model. From
left to right are the GF-680 ($299), GF-480 ($299), and the GF-290 ($199).

The TEAC GF-350, priced at $449, is also in the lineup, but
has the ability to record LPs direct to CD-Rs.

Cable-maker MIT is trying to appeal to budget-conscious
enthusiasts with the new EXp "extra performance" line. There are four
single-ended interconnects, called simply the 1, 2, 3, and 4, which are projected to be
priced from $79.95 (1) to $29.95 (4) for one-meter pairs. There are matching speaker
cables -- the 1, 2, and 3. EXp Proline balanced cables will be priced at about $99.95 for
a one-meter length.

MIT also released its AVt "audio/video
terminator" series of video cables." All prices are projected: SCART, $49.95;
DVI-D, $49.95; and HDMI, $89.95.

The well-known Carver name has been resurrected once again
by Phoenix Gold, but it is now Carver Digital. Shown on rack in the photo left is the
HTA5.1 multichannel amplifier (top shelf with CD player above), priced at $2995. The
HTA5.1 is a modular design based on the amplifier card shown in the photo right. Up to
seven channels can be mounted in the amplifier chassis. Below the HTA 5.1 is the
M700.2 stereo amplifier, priced at $1895. Second from the bottom is the HTP 9.1
surround-sound processor, $3495. Finally, on the bottom is the SW-500DC subwoofer, which
costs $1299.
